El Rompido North Course is one of Andalusia's true golf gems. Opened in 2006, the course has quickly established itself as one of Europe's top 100 courses according to leading golfing communities. This Alvaro Arana design is renowned as a monument to modern, intelligent and entertaining golf where the natural experience is at least as great as the sporting challenge.

The course is beautifully carved into the heart of the Marismas del Río Piedras and Flecha de El Rompido nature reserve, meaning you play completely without any surrounding buildings. Instead, you are greeted by pine trees, fragrant orange groves and a river delta that changes character with the tide.

Course character: Strategy, length and precision

While El Rompido's South Course offers a classic park setting close to the clubhouse, the North Course is located higher up in the terrain and places higher demands on your strategic thinking. It is best described in three words:

• Modern: The course challenges the modern golfer by rewarding a combination of powerful shots and surgical precision.
• Intelligent: It's a course that forces you to think before every shot. Just pounding the driver off the tee is rarely the best strategy.
• Entertaining: Thanks to its well-planned, medium-sized greens, the course is challenging for the single handicapper, but at the same time fair and very enjoyable for the golfer with a higher handicap.

Highlights along the route

• The opening holes (1–7): The round starts dramatically as the first seven holes weave closely along the edge of the river delta and wetlands (“marisman”). Here, the landscape constantly changes depending on the ebb and flow, and the water hazards demand full focus.
• The challenge on holes 5 & 8: Two really tough and long par 5 holes (both over 515 meters from the yellow tee) that will put your length and endurance to the test.
• The Orange Groves on Holes 8 & 17: When the citrus blossoms, a wonderful scent wafts over these holes. But beware – if you hit out of bounds here, the ball will often land deep among the orange trees.
• The Spectacular Hole 16: A stunning 140-meter par-3 located right on the edge of the wetland. The long, narrow green is guarded by two deep bunkers on either side – a hole where a par feels like a birdie!

Practical information & Facilities

El Rompido Norra is a fantastic course to play as the terrain is relatively flat and pleasant. This makes the resort extremely popular with longstay travellers who appreciate being able to play a lot of golf without being dependent on a golf cart.

Playing tips for the North Course: When the tide is low it can be tempting to try to hit the ball from inside the "marisman" (wetland) if you have missed the fairway, but experience shows that it rarely pays off. Take your shot, drop, and enjoy Andalusia's most wonderful natural experience instead!
